Collection: Human Hair

Human hair is a complex and dynamic structure composed primarily of a protein called keratin. It grows from follicles located in the skin and serves various purposes, including insulation, protection, and sensory functions. Hair consists of three main parts: the hair shaft, hair root, and hair follicle.

• Hair Shaft: The visible part of the hair, extending from the scalp. It's made up of tightly packed keratin cells, which give hair its strength and texture. The shaft itself has three layers: the cuticle (the outer layer), the cortex (the middle layer, responsible for color and texture), and the medulla (the innermost layer, which is often absent in fine hair).

• Hair Root: This part is located beneath the skin's surface and anchors the hair to the scalp. The root contains living cells that rapidly divide to form new hair cells, pushing older cells up and out as the hair grows.

• Hair Follicle: The tiny, sac-like structure from which the hair grows. It houses the root and connects to sebaceous glands that produce oil, keeping hair moisturized. The follicle also contains a muscle (the arrector pili) that can make hair stand upright in response to cold or emotions.

Human hair varies in texture, color, and density, with characteristics determined by genetics, health, and environmental factors. It comes in different types, such as straight, wavy, and curly, and can range in color from black to blonde, red, or even gray as a person ages. Hair growth follows a cycle of three stages: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest). Most hair on the scalp is in the anagen phase at any given time.

In addition to its biological functions, hair often holds cultural significance, symbolizing identity, beauty, and even social status.
